Abundance: Fairly Common at all seasons; recorded in all Regional counties (Map of UCR Distribution); the trend in the Regional breeding population is difficult to determine but probably stable (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Status: Permanent Resident; specimen (13 June 1938; Rocky Branch, Wayne County, Kentucky; W. M. Perrygo; Wetmore 1940); photograph (see above).

Regional High Count and CBC/CBB High Count: 87 (21 December 2009; White County, Tennessee [CBC]; m. ob.); FBC/FBB High Count: 84 (4 October 2008; White County, Tennessee [FBC]; m. ob.); SBC/SBB High Count: 40 (24–25 April 1965; Putnam County, Tennessee (SBC]; m. ob.; Note: a 2-day count).

Breeding: Confirmed (Recent).

Habitat: x

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004:  Registered on 67 (of 125) monthly check-lists during 2003 and on 163 (of 206) check-lists during 2004, resulting in a YardWatch frequency classification of Common during each year; this YardWatch frequency classification indicates that the flicker is a bit more frequently encountered in Regional yards and neighborhoods than in the Region as a whole.

* Because some foray blocks fall into two or three counties, the total of blocks in the Kentucky or Tennessee portions of the Region is less than the sum of the blocks in the counties of each portion of the Region; similarly, because some blocks fall into both states, the total of blocks for the Region is less than the sum of the blocks in the two states.

Remarks: The most terrestrial of the woodpeckers in the Region (see photo above). A favored food source of flickers is the ant, which flickers necessarily forage for on the ground; incidents of nesting on the ground are also known to occur for this piciformid.
