Warblers in Tennessee during Nesting

This assessment of Tennessee breeding warbler populations is fairly accurate but
fails to mention locations
of some warbler populations
in the Tennessee portion of the Upper
Cumberland Region, notably for GWWA,
CSWA, CERW, PROW, and SWWA. Misinformed
about minimum pine patch size attractive to PIWA.

State and
professor of engineering at Tennessee Tech. Dunckel founded the
Upper Cumberland Bird Club in the late
1950s and banded many birds in Cookeville during the late 1950s and 1960s,

December 1969) in

Nicholson, C. P. 1991. Geographic Patterns
in Species Occurrence of Tennessee's Breeding
Birds. Journal of the Tennessee
Academy of Science 66 (4): 195–199.
A statistical analysis of preliminary breeding bird atlas data
collected during late 1980s, showing four
distinctive bird communities to occur
in Tennessee, one of which is the Cumberlands/low Blue Ridge, a
community present in 14 counties in
the Tennessee portion of the Upper Cumberland Region; indeed, only
Macon and Smith counties were
unrepresented by this community of birds, which possesses "somewhat
lower than average numbers of species and
mid-elevation forest species such as the Solitary [Blue-headed]
Vireo (V. solitarius) and Black-throated
Green Warbler (D. virens)."
Nicholson, C. P. 1997. Atlas of the Breeding Birds
of Tennessee. University of Tennessee
Press, Knoxville, Tennessee.
Presents atlas results for 170 breeding species recorded
1986-1991. Data were collected from about 2700
(65%) of the 4200 "blocks"
(areas about 2600 ha [c. 10 square miles] in extent, representing one-sixth of a
USGS quadrangle) comprising Tennessee with
most of the focus of attention on 700 priority blocks. The project
began in 1986 and continued to 1991.Coverage
within the Upper Cumberland Region was roughly
as complete as
coverage elsewhere in the state.

Nicholson, C. P. 2004. Ecology of
Cerulean Warbler in the Cumberland Mountains of East
Tennessee. Dissertation Univ. of
Tennessee, Knoxville.
Easily the most thorough and important work devoted to one sp.
in the Region's ornithological history. That the
species involved is of special
conservation concern as a declining Neotropical migrant breeding in the Region
makes this work of even greater value
than it would have been otherwise. A slightly edited version of the Abstract
provided in the work follows: ".
. . Describes the distribution, local breeding densities and population trends,
breeding biology, and habitat
selection of the CERW (Dendroica cerulea) in the Cumberland Mountains of
[Anderson, Campbell, Morgan, and
Scott counties], Tennessee. Point counts were conducted during [3]
years at
[6] study sites [including Frozen
Head State Park, Wilson Mt., Little Brushy Mt., and Lone Mt.--all Morgan
Co.--and
UT Cumberland Mt. Forestry Station,
Scott Co.]. CERW was detected at 50% of the point counts [n = 450+] and
was [6th] most frequently encountered
bird. Spot-map censuses were conducted on [5] plots at [3] study sites.
CERW occurred on all census plots at
an average density of 84.9 pairs/100 ha. Average density on individual
plots
ranged from 21.3 to 137.6 pairs/100
ha. Although population trends on the census plots were not uniform, there was
an overall decline during the late
1990s [emphasis added].
"The breeding
biology of the CERW was studied by observing courtship behavior and
nest-building, and [by]
monitoring . . . 52 nests.
Female CERWs built nests, incubated eggs, and brooded nestlings. Females
fed
nestlings more than males [fed
nestlings]; the rate at which males and females removed fecal sacs from the nest
did not differ. Mean clutch
size was 3.7+/- 0.13 SE. For . . .1996-1999, nest success, measured by the
Mayfield
method, averaged 0.3708; the daily
nest success rate averaged 0.9685+/- 0.0057 SE. The major cause of nest
failure appeared to be weather
events, including presumed nestling starvation during unusually cool and wet
weather.
"Nests were
built in 12 taxa of deciduous trees. Although there were some
plot-specific preferences [selecting for
black cherry, sugar maple, and yellow
poplar; and avoiding red maple], most tree taxa were selected in proportion
to their availability. Nests averaged
15.9 m +/- 0.81 SE (range 7.0-36.3 m) above ground. Nest trees averaged
23.6
m +/- 0.90 SE (range 10.2-42.2 m)
tall and 39.6 cm +/- 2.53 SE (range 12.3-76.2 cm) in diameter at breast height.
"Habitat
characteristics were sampled at nest sites, territory sites, and random sites on
census plots, and at
point count locations. Basal area was
consistently greater, and both shrub cover and canopy cover consistently
less, at nest sites than at random
plots, at territory sites than at random sites, and at nest sites than at
territory
sites. Point count locations
where CERWs were present had larger diameter live trees and more sapling cover
than
locations where the warbler was
absent. Logistic regression models successfully classified over 70% of
sites on
census plots but were less successful
in predicting CERW presence at point count locations."

Palmer-Ball, B. L., Jr., 1996. The Kentucky Breeding
Bird Atlas. The University Press of
Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky.
Presents results for 154 species of breeding birds, 146 of which
were confirmed breeders in the state. Coverage
was focused on 727 priority blocks
that constitute roughly one-sixth of the area of the state; usually the
center
west block within each USGS
quadrangle was surveyed; this degree of coverage held true within the Upper
Cumberland
Region as well as within the
state. Coverage began in 1985 and continued to 1991 with most coverage of
rural areas
occurring in the later years of the
project. Among the first generation of state breeding bird atlases produced in
North
America, this one must rank as
somewhat middling at best, covering only about 17% of the state. The
graphic
presentation of the abundance of the
species is based on rather subjective criteria rather than quantitative data,
while
the actual abundance graphs are
misrepresentative of abundance because a somewhat questionable decision was
made to use the subjective block
abundance data to represent entire quadrangle-sized areas; furthermore, for
common
species the abundance shading
completely obliterates county outlines, making it difficult to know exactly
where the
abundance gradients are located.
All in all, this atlas, while far better than no atlas, leaves much to be
desired.

The record of SEOW in Monroe Co. was appended as a "notable but uncorroborated report from eBird" to the end of this report, displaying lack of knowledge and/or professionalism on the part of the senior author of this report. All eBird reports are reviewed (and either accepted or rejected) by a knowledgeable birder; the record of SEOW from Monroe Co. was reviewed and accepted by such an eBird reviewer; the senior author of this report either did not know this standard procedure, reflecting considerable ignorance about an important source of bird records, or knew this standard eBird procedure but decided to cast doubt on the Monroe Co. SEOW record despite possessing such knowledge, thus displaying a serious lack of professionalism and giving cause to doubt his ability to handle bird records in a fair and objective manner.
