Abundance: Common during spring, summer, and fall; Rare during early winter; recorded in all Regional counties (Map of UCR Distribution); data from the Regional bird-monitoring efforts indicate a stable trend in the population breeding in the Region (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).
Status: Summer Resident; breeds in all Regional counties; Visitor during early winter (5 records); specimen (15 June 1938; Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky; W. M. Perrygo; Wetmore 1940); photograph [window-stunned immature male] (Stan Hood; Aspen Dr., Putnam County, Tennessee; 30 September 2006).
Regional High Count and SBC/SBB High Count: 409 (12 May 2001; Putnam County, Tennessee [SBC]; m. ob.); FBC/FBB High Count: 90 (25 September 2004; White County, Tennessee [FBC]; m. ob.).
Out-of-Season (Winter) Records:
18 December 1999 (1) near west end of Brown's Mill Rd., Putnam County, Tennessee (Stephen J. Stedman et al.), a CBC record.

Regional Extreme Dates:
Early Spring: 1 April 2012 (Fentress County Business Park, Fentress County, Tennessee; Stephen J. Stedman; Doug Bruce, Melinda Fawver).
Late Fall: x (
Note: Spring arrival usually widespread by 25 April; fall departure largely complete by 15 October; the presence of yellow-throats during winter renders the early spring arrival date and the late fall departure date somewhat less critical data than would be true for species not known to overwinter in the Region. Regional dates of earliest reported spring arrival and latest reported fall departure for the years 2002–2011 follow:
Year | Early Spring Arrival | Late Fall Departure |
2002 | 12 April | 13 October * |
2003 | 10 April | 1 November |
2004 | 14 April | 26 November * |
2005 | 13 April | 19 October |
2006 | 11 April | 25 October * |
2007 | 16 April | 26 October |
2008 | 9 April | 17 October |
2009 | 11 April | 24 October |
2010 | 10 April | -- * |
2011 | 10 April | 24 October |
* But see also Out-of-Season (Winter) Records (above).
Breeding: Confirmed (Recent).
Habitat: Brushy, second-growth sites; edges with a thick understory component.
YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: Registered on 30 (of 125 possible) monthly check-lists during 2003 and on 55 (of 206 possible) check-lists during 2004, leading to a YardWatch frequency classification of Fairly Common each year; the Common Yellowthroat is a bit less likely to be encountered in Regional yards and neighborhoods than in the Region as a whole.

* Because some foray blocks fall into two or three counties, the total of blocks in the Kentucky or Tennessee portions of the Region is less than the sum of the blocks in the counties of each portion of the Region; similarly, because some blocks fall into both states, the total of blocks for the Region is less than the sum of the blocks in the two states.

Check-lists of Birds for the Counties of the UCR
Check-lists of the birds of each county of the Upper Cumberland Region may be viewed by clicking on the links below. For each county, there are two check-lists: one list that shows the species that have been observed and where possible documented in the county within the larger list for the entire Region; and one list that includes only the species observed in the county with annotations for the date and observers for at least one sighting (the ultimate goal of the latter list will be to include annotations for the very first known Regional observation of each species in that county; this goal is probably one that will take many years to complete, if completion is even a possibility). To see if the species discussed in this species account has been observed in a county, click below or click on the link for the Map of UCR Distribution near the top of the page.
