Abundance: Uncommon to Very Uncommon; recorded in all Regional counties (Map of UCR Distribution); data from the Regional bird-monitoring efforts indicate the population migrating through the Region is probably stable, but data about the small Regional breeding population are too few to determine a trend (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Status: Summer Resident at higher elevations of the Cumberland Plateau and Cumberland Mountains; Transient in remainder of Region.

Regional High Count and FBC/FBB High Count: 34 (16 September 2006; Putnam County, Tennessee [FBC]; m. ob.).

    Note: Spring arrival usually widespread by 5 May; fall departure largely complete by 1 October.  Regional dates of earliest reported spring arrival and latest reported fall departure for the years 2002–2011 follow:

Breeding: Confirmed (Recent). A nest with eggs was found during late May 1985 near the top of Hinch Mountain, Cumberland County, Tennessee (David F. Vogt, Stephen J. Stedman).

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: Registered on 5 (of 125 possible) monthly check-lists during 2003 and on 8 (of 206 possible) check-lists during 2004, leading to a YardWatch frequency classification of Very Uncommon for each year; the YardWatch result indicates that the Chestnut-side is less frequentlly encountered in Regional yards and neighborhoods than in the Region as a whole.
