Abundance: Uncommon during winter and spring (when courtship mainly occurs); Very Uncommon during summer and fall (when courtship less in evidence); recorded in 23 Regional counties (Map of UCR Distribution); data from the Regional bird-monitoring efforts indicate that the population breeding in the Region is probably stable, but the data are not robust (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Status: Permanent Resident.

Regional High Count: 35 (14 March 2008; Pulaski County, Kentucky; Roseanna M. Denton); CBC/CBB High Count: 6 (23 December 2006; Cumberland County, Tennessee [Crossville CBC]; m. ob.); SBC/SBB High Count: 6 (24 April 1976; Putnam County, Tennessee [SBC]; m. ob.); FBC/FBB High Count: 4 (16 September 2006; Putnam County, Tennessee [FBC]; m. ob.).

Breeding: Confirmed (Recent).  Like nearly all shorebirds, the woodcock is a ground nester; its clutch is almost always four eggs.  Here is a photo (C. Korrow; Bull Ridge Rd., Cumberland County, Kentucky; 14 April 2008) of a "frozen" fledgling woodcock.

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: Registered on 7 (of 125) monthly check-lists during 2003 and on 11 (of 206) check-lists during 2004, leading to a YardWatch frequency classification of Very Uncommon during each year; this YardWatch frequency classification is consistent with the overall Regional abundance classification for summer and fall but not for winter and spring.
