American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis)

Abundance: Common at all seasons; recorded in all Regional counties (Map of UCR Distribution); the trend for the Regional population is stable or possibly increasing (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Status: Permanent Resident; specimen (10 June 1938; Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky; W. M. Perrygo; Wetmore 1940); photograph [lateral view of basic-plumaged male; note black feathers in forehead] (Stephen J. Stedman; City Lake, Putnam County, Tennessee; 9 December 2011).

Regional High Count and CBC/CBB High Count: 364 (15 December 2008; Clay County, Tennessee [CBC]; m. ob.); SBC/SBB High Count: 258 (24–25 April 1964; Putnam County, Tennessee [SBC]; m. ob.; Note: a 2-day count); FBC/FBB High Count: 248 (15 September 2007; Putnam County, Tennessee [FBC]; m. ob.).

Breeding: Confirmed (Recent). The goldfinch is among the latest to nest of the Region's breeding species; its nesting cycle coincides with the appearance of thistle down during late summer; this down comprises an important part of the nest of this finch.

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: Registered on 118 (of 125) monthly check-lists during 2003 and on 199 (of 206) check-lists during 2004, resulting in a YardWatch frequency classification of Common during each year; this YardWatch frequency classification is consistent with the overall Regional abundance classification.
