Abundance: Common during fall, winter, and spring; Uncommon during summer; recorded in all Regional counties (Map of UCR Distribution); the Regional breeding population is probably stable or possibly increasing, the same being true of the wintering population (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Regional High Count: 4000 (30 January 2014; Barren/Allen counties, Kentucky; David L. Roemer); CBC/CBB High Count: 626 (1 January 2005; Pulaski County, Kentucky [Somerset CBC]; m. ob.); FBC/FBB High Count: 88 (29 September 2007; White County, Tennessee [FBC]; m. ob.); SBC/SBB High Count: 61 (3 May 2011; White County, Tennessee [SBC]; m. ob.).

Breeding: Confirmed (Recent).

Habitat: Varied water-related sites.

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: Registered on 5 (of 125) monthly check-lists during 2003 and on 39 (of 206) check-lists during 2004, resulting in Yard Watch frequency classifications of Rare and Uncommon, respectively; neither of these YardWatch frequency classifications is consistent with the overall Regional abundance of this duck although the latter classification is consistent with regard to abundance during summer.

* Because some foray blocks fall into two or three counties, the total of blocks in the Kentucky or Tennessee portions of the Region is less than the sum of the blocks in the counties of each portion of the Region; similarly, because some blocks fall into both states, the total of blocks for the Region is less than the sum of the blocks in the two states.

Remarks: The High Count (above) was achieved during a period when Barren River Reservoir was mostly frozen, concentrating waterfowl in a few areas where open water remained.
