Abundance: Fairly Common during spring and fall; Very Uncommon but increasing during summer and winter; recorded in 24 Regional counties (Map of UCR Distribution); increasing continentally (BBS data) and probably also increasing Regionally (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Status: Transient, but approaching the point of becoming a Permanent Resident as more and more observations from summer and winter accumulate; photograph [distant ventral view of immature resting on log] (Stephen J. Stedman; Swafford Pond, Bledsoe County, Tennessee; 11 November 2001).

Regional High Count: X (   ); SBC/SBB High Count: 59 (26 April 2008; Jackson County, Tennessee [SBB]; m. ob.); FBC/FBB High Count: 30 (18 September 2004; Putnam County, Tennessee [FBC]; m. ob.); CBC/CBB High Count: 3 (28 December 1990; Barren County, Kentucky [Glasgow CBC]; m. ob.).

Breeding: Confirmed (Recent). Often found nesting in colonies of Great Blue Herons, this expanding species was recently confirmed as a Regional breeder in Cumberland County, Kentucky (David L. Roemer photos) in just such a circumstance.

Habitat: Aquatic environments of many sorts.
