Abundance: Very Uncommon during fall; Rare during spring; Rare during winter; at least 47 records in 12 Regional counties, 4 in Kentucky and 8 in Tennessee (Map of UCR Distribution); data from the Regional bird-monitoring efforts are too few to determine a trend in the population migrating through the Region (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).
Status: Transient during spring (7 records) and fall (35 records); Visitor during early winter (5 records); sight and sound records.
Regional High Count and FBC/FBB High Count: 6 (1 October 2005; White County, Tennessee [FBC]; Douglas A. Downs, Stephen J. Regional Extreme Dates:
Spring: 15 April 2000 (Russell County, Kentucky; Scott Marsh)–15 May 2005 (Cumberland County, Tennessee; Joseph E. Mast).
Fall: 18 September 2004 (Putnam County, Tennessee; Barbara H. Stedman)– 9 November 2001 (Warren County, Tennessee; Stephen J. Stedman, C. Douglas Malone, Crystal Malone), but see also Out-of-Season (Winter) Records (above).
Habitat: Thick, weedy vegetation growing to a height of 0.5–1 m, usually at mesic sites; small ponds ringed with cattail and spear-grass (Juncus spp.) are favored sites of this skulking wren; mesic meadows with vegetation of the proper height are also favored.
YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: Registered on 2 (of 125 possible) monthly check-lists during 2003 and on 3 (of 206 possible) during 2004, yielding a YardWatch frequency classification of Rare during each year; this YardWatch frequency classification indicates that the Marsh Wren was about as frequently encountered in Regional yards and neighborhoods during the former year, and almost so during the latter year, as in the Region as a whole.
Remarks: Thirty of forty Regional records have occurred during the 2000s, including all five early winter records, a temporal distribution that possibly attests to an increase in the overall skill level of the Regional birding cadre but that alternatively may indicate a response to global warming or a recent increase in the frequency of occurrence of this species in the Region (or both).
Check-lists of Birds for the Counties of the UCR
Check-lists of the birds of each county of the Upper Cumberland Region may be viewed by clicking on the links below. For each county, there are two check-lists: one list that shows the species that have been observed and where possible documented in the county within the larger list for the entire Region; and one list that includes only the species observed in the county with annotations for the date and observers for at least one sighting (the ultimate goal of the latter list will be to include annotations for the very first known Regional observation of each species in that county; this goal is probably one that will take many years to complete, if completion is even a possibility). To see if the species discussed in this species account has been observed in a county, click below or click on the link for the Map of UCR Distribution near the top of the page.
