Birds of the Upper Cumberland Region: Species Accounts
Philadelphia Vireo (Vireo philadelphicus)
Philadelphia Vireo [lateral view of adult]: Photograph Credit: David L. Roemer; Dry Creek Unit, Barren River Reservoir WMA, Barren County, Kentucky; 18 May 2012.
Abundance: Very Uncommon during spring and fall; recorded in 22 Regional counties, 9 in Kentucky and 13 in Tennessee (Map of UCR Distribution); the Regional migrant population is too small and/or too poorly sampled to allow meaningful determination of its population trend (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).
Status: Transient; photograph [ventral view of fall individual] (Carol D. Williams; DeKalb County, Tennessee; 25 September 2010).
Regional High Count and SBC/SBB High Count: 7 (12–13 May 1951; Overton County, Tennessee [SBB]; m. ob.); FBC/FBB High Count: 5 (2 October 2010; McCreary County, Kentucky [FBB]; m. ob.).
Regional Extreme Dates:
Spring: x (
Fall: x (
Note: Data for spring are too sparse to generate dates by which this vireo becomes widespread or completes its migration; fall arrival usually widespread by 15 September; fall departure typically complete by 5 October. Regional dates of earliest reported spring arrival and latest reported spring departure, as well as earliest reported fall arrival and latest reported fall departure, for the migration seasons 2002–2011 follow:
Year | Early Spring Arrival Date | Late Spring Departure Date | Early Fall Arrival Date | Late Fall Departure Date |
2002 | 11 May | 19 May | 7 September | 20 October |
2003 | -- | 27 May | 16 September | 13 October |
2004 | 3 May | -- | 18 September | 9 October |
2005 | -- | -- | 16 September | 5 October |
2006 | -- | -- | 8 September | 7 October |
2007 | 7 May | -- | 2 September | 7 October |
2008 | 3 May | -- | -- | -- |
2009 | -- | -- | 11 September | 5 October |
2010 | -- | -- | 9 September | 2 October |
2011 | 3 May | -- | 6 September | 14 October |

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: Registered on 1 (of 125) monthly check-list during 2003 and on 2 (of 206) check-lists during 2004, leading to a YardWatch frequency classification of Rare during each year; this YardWatch frequency classification indicates that this vireo is a bit less frequently encountered in Regional yards and neighborhoods than in the Region as a whole.

Check-lists of Birds for the Counties of the UCR
Check-lists of the birds of each county of the Upper Cumberland Region may be viewed by clicking on the links below. For each county, there are two check-lists: one list that shows the species that have been observed and where possible documented in the county within the larger list for the entire Region; and one list that includes only the species observed in the county with annotations for the date and observers for at least one sighting (the ultimate goal of the latter list will be to include annotations for the very first known Regional observation of each species in that county; this goal is probably one that will take many years to complete, if completion is even a possibility). To see if the species discussed in this species account has been observed in a county, click below or click on the link for the Map of UCR Distribution near the top of the page.
