Upper Cumberland Region YardWatch: Central Node
Note: this project was active during 2003 and 2004 but not thereafter; it may be returned to active status during a later year.
The main purpose of YardWatch is to provide data about the period of occurrence and the abundance of bird species occurring within the Upper Cumberland Region, mainly for the creation of bar graphs to be included in a book on the birds of the Region. A secondary purpose is to provide novice birders with information that will allow them to determine the likelihood of observing a particular species within their own yards and neighborhoods. If a species was very frequently registered during YardWatch, then it could be expected to occur in most yards and neighborhoods around the Region. Conversely, if a species was seldom or never registered during YardWatch, then it is much less likely to occur in most yards and neighborhoods around the Region.
The skill level of participants in the YardWatch Project varied considerably, presumably mirroring the various skill levels of the general birding population, but probably surpassing the skill level of the general birdwatching public. If you have some birding skills, then the data generated by the YardWatch Project probably offer a fairly accurate assessment of your probability of seeing a particular species in your yard; however, if you are a novice birdwatcher, then the data from this project may overestimate your probability of seeing a particular species in your yard, so you will need to compensate conservatively in assessing your probability of seeing a particular species.
