Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris)

Abundance: Occasional; 2 Regional records, 1 in each of 2 Kentucky counties, each record involving a single individual (Map of UCR Disbtribution); data from the Regional bird-monitoring efforts are too few to determine a trend in the population visiting the the Region (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Status: Transient during spring (2 records); videotape and photograph (see link below).

Information on Records: 

27 April 1997 (1—female) Science Hill, Pulaski County, Kentucky (Roseanna M. Denton; Palmer-Ball 2003).

26 May 2006 (1—adult male) Warsaw Rd., Whites Bottom, Cumberland County, Kentucky (Gary Thompson videotape; Yandell 2008); photo (still obtained by D. Roemer from video by G. Thompson).

Regional Extreme Dates:

    Spring: 27 April 1997 (1; Pulaski County, Kentucky; Roseanna M. Denton)–26 May 2006 (1; Cumberland County, Kentucky; Gary Thompson).

    Fall: no records.

Habitat: Each record involved a bird at a backyard feeding station. These records represent two of the four known sightings of Painted Bunting in Kentucky with the Cumberland County, Kentucky, record being just the second Kentucky record to be fully documented.

YardWatch Results 2003 and 2004: no registrations.
