Results of the 49th Cookeville, Tennessee, Christmas Bird Count, Conducted 18 December 2010

Two Trumpeter Swans, a new species for Putnam County and for the Cookeville CBC, were first observed on City Lake 14 December 2010 by Barbara H. Stedman and were photographed (above) on that date by DJ Stanley; they remained to be recorded on count day and a few days beyond.

The 49th Cookeville Christmas Bird Count (CBC) was conducted 18 December 2010. The total species—96—recorded during the CBC exceeded the previous record species total—91—accumulated during the history of this count, a total achieved during each of the previous two CBC seasons (20082009 and 20092010).

One species new to the Cookeville CBC was observed during this count: Trumpeter Swan (see photo above).

Comments:

cw = observed some time during count week (December 1517 & 1921) only.

* = new Cookeville CBC high count (16 species plus 2 ties).

** = new Cookeville CBC high count and Putnam County high count (1 speciesPutnam County high count in parentheses if different from CBC high count; the Putnam County high count may be lower than the CBC high count because part of the CBC circle is in White County; any birds seen in that county may be counted as part of the Cookeville CBC high count, but not as part of the Putnam County all-time high count).

One species denoted in red was new to the Cookeville CBC, bringing the all-time species total for this CBC to 136.

The two Trumpeter Swans first appeared on City Lake 14 December 2010 (BHS); they remained until count day (SJS) and several days beyond, becoming the first of their kind to be recorded in Putnam County.

The total of 27 Red-shouldered Hawks tied the high count for Tennessee CBCs.

The Merlin was observed near the Southern Hills Golf Course in the southwest territory of the CBC circle (DLC, EKL).

The Loggerhead Shrikes were located as follows: Elbert Mackie Rd. (DAD); Foster Circle (GKE, MJH, NSL); Castlebrook subdivision at intersection of Countess Trail and King's Court off Shipley Rd. (GKE, MJH, NSL); and in White County near the intersection of Old Kentucky Rd. and Old Cookeville Rd. (WB, SB, DB).

The Gray Catbird was observed at the end of Old Cookeville Rd. in the White County portion of the CBC circle (WB).

The Rusty Blackbirds were observed near the Southern Hills Golf Course in the southwest territory of the CBC circle (DLC, EKL).
