Results of Christmas Bird Counts Conducted in the Upper Cumberland Region of Kentucky and Tennessee during the 2010–2011 (111th) CBC Season
Adult
Trumpeter Swan photographed by Ed Schneider on City Lake, Putnam County,
Tennessee, 15 December 2010; this swan and a companion remained to be counted during the Cookeville CBC. |
About 119 species of birds were registered on the 10 Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) conducted this CBC season in the Region (Table 1). Two species not heretofore represented in the Regional CBC data were added this season: Dunlin and Short-eared Owl, both registered on the Glasgow CBC. Weather played a powerful role in determining the results of several counts, including Wayne County, KY, Clay County, TN, and Somerset, KY, where rain or wind or both were factors that depressed the species totals achieved on those counts. Snow cover also affected the count in Clay County, limiting access to some back roads usually covered more thoroughly than was the case this year. Very cold conditions seemed to reduce populations of some species normally found in higher numbers than was the case this year; Killdeer, for instance, was counted in quite low numbers of some of the Regional CBCs.
The circles for the 10 CBCs conducted in the Region cover a total of 4335 square km (1770 square mi); since the Region itself covers 26450 square km (10212 square mi), the 10 CBC circles represent 17.3% of the area within the Region, a percentage that probably equals or exceeds the threshold needed to allow the CBC data to be representative of the Regional birdlife as a whole.
Data from CBCs provide one of two major sources of data used in monitoring bird populations at the continental level, the other being data from the Breeding Bird Survey. At the Regional level, CBC/CBB data clearly have the same importance in monitoring bird populations, at least for species that can be classified as uncommon to common Regionally during winter. Here is a link to the Regional bird-monitoring plan:
