Results of Christmas Bird Counts and a Christmas BirdBlitz Conducted  in the Upper Cumberland Region of Kentucky and Tennessee during the 20082009 (109th) CBC Season

An adult White-crowned Sparrow photographed in Warren County, Tennessee, during the last Regional CBC of the season; photo Carol D. Williams (3 January 2009).

About 112 species of birds were registered on the ten Regional Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs, annually repeated bird counts) and the Christmas BirdBlitz (CBB, a one-time bird count) conducted this CBC season (Table 1).  This total is consistent with the totals achieved during the previous five CBC seasons, when the range of total species on the Regional CBCs was 109113.  The soft mast crop in the Region was excellent this winter, and there was a slightly better than average set of irruptions of boreal species, especially Pine Siskins but also Purple Finches and to a lesser degree Red-breasted Nuthatches.  It should also be noted that this CBC season witnessed more counts (11) being conducted in the Region than were conducted during any of the previous five seasons.

The composition of the winter avifauna in the Region is reflected by the results of the Regional CBCs, but just how faithfully the CBC data reflect the actual state of the avifauna is difficult to know (and may, in fact, be one of those unknowable matters that tantalize those who seek to understand the nature of the birdlife).  Of the 111 species detected by the Regional CBCs (excepting Glasgow which added a 112th species), 58 are permanent residents, 51 are winter residents (or late migrants), and 2 are lingering summer residents.  Another way to parse these species is by their frequency of occurrence on 10 Regional CBCs (excepting Glasgow): 51 species were found on all 10 CBCs; 39 on 59 CBCs; 11 on 24 CBCs; and 10 on just 1 CBC.  Table 2 (below) allows one to view the species in each of these ways.  Viewing the species in these ways shows which of them are potentially susceptible to population monitoring using CBC data.  Eventually, it will be possible to take a decade's worth of fairly uniform CBC data for these species, present those data in terms of numbers seen per party hour of effort, and perform a statistical analysis to see if significant trends are present in them.  See the page accessible via the link below for a discussion of the current status of Regional bird monitoring:

Some very uncommon or rare species were undoubtedly present in the Region during the CBC season but not detected during the CBCs, which totaled 474 party hours of effort.  Barn Owl and Short-eared Owl are examples of such species, but others undoubtedly also went undetected, exactly how many being another of those unknowable matters that are attached to study of the Regional birdlife.

To see a map (Figure 1) of the Upper Cumberland Region (UCR) showing locations of circles within which CBCs and the CBB were conducted this season, click on the following link:

The circles for the ten CBCs and the CBB conducted in the Region cover a total of 5041 square km (1947 square mi); since the Region itself covers 26450 square km (10212 square mi), the eleven CBC/CBB circles represent 19% of the area within the Region, a percentage that probably equals or exceeds the threshold needed to allow the CBC data to be representative of the Regional birdlife as a whole.

To see a table comparing total species listed on CBCs/CBBs each winter with total species listed on Great Backyard Bird Counts (GBBCs) each winter since the winter of 20032004, click on the following link:
