Results of the Bledsoe County, Tennessee, Christmas BirdBlitz29 December 2008

The first Christmas BirdBlitz (CBB) in the Region was conducted in Bledsoe County 29 December 2008. It was also the first winter count of any sort in that county.  There are no plans to continue this count in future years, thus its being referred to as a birdblitz rather than a bird count.  It was conducted on a one-time basis to collect some early winter data from a county where such data have not been collected in the past (or at least not made publicly available, if collected).

The topography of Bledsoe County is unique in the Upper Cumberland Region, being composed partly of land lying on the Cumberland Plateau at elevations of 1800-2000 ft and partly of land lying in the Sequatchie Valley, an eroded and collapsed anticline, with an elevation of about 1000 ft.  This elevational diversity no doubt causes differences in the densities of the bird populations inhabiting the valley, the plateau, and the intervening escarpments during early winter.  However, it should be noted that these assumed differences may have been modified this winter by an extremely good mast crop, especially soft mast, which probably increased the densities of many of the bird populations in all of these areas to some extent.  Thus, the results below may not be entirely typical; they are, however, far better than no results at all, the prevailing condition prior to the conducting of this count.

Comments:

Ruddy Duck: at Swafford Pond in AM (AFM, JEM) but not seen later in day.

Sandhill Crane: numerous flocks in Sequatchie Valley apparently feeding rather than migrating though rarely seen on ground.

Whooping Cranes: 2 adult-plumaged birds heard and seen on ground in cow pasture near Brushy Cemetery (north of Ninemile Rd.) at 07000720 CST (EKL). Birds briefly disturbed by cattle and flew up and back down after 12 minutes.  Band combination as seen through  40x scope: Bird 1left: white over green over white; right: transmitter (?) only; Bird 2left: green over red; right? over white (or white only); birds not seen later in day.

House Wren: seen and heard (SJS) on Cumberland Plateau near Watson Loop.
