Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) represent the longest-running, citizen-science, fauna-monitoring project in the world today; furthermore, no other such project has brought so large a number of participants into its fold, literally many tens of thousands over the past century.  Begun Christmas Day 1900 by Frank Chapman and 26 other dedicated birders of the very late Nineteenth Century who collectively conducted 25 CBCs and counted 90 species of birds that day, this project is now tri-continental in scope with more than 2000 sites being included in its ever-increasing database. Many veterans of bird counts consider it to be the highlight of the birding year.
