Abundance: Very Uncommon; at least 17 records from 10 Regional counties, 5 in Kentucky and 5 in Tennessee (Map of UCR Distribution); data from the Regional bird-monitoring efforts are too few to determine a trend in the population migrating through the Region (see also Regional Bird-Monitoring Plan).

Status: Transient; late fall (3 records) to mid-winter (14 records) but with no records of overwintering; photographs (see above and links below).

Regional High Count: 3 (penultimate record below).

RemarksThis swan was reported without date or specific location from Warren County, Tennessee, by C. Douglas Malone (pers. com).

Six large white waterfowl observed at Cedar Hill Dock, Lake Cumberland, 29 September 1929 (Russell Starr; Starr 1955) may have pertained to this species, but the date of the sighting certainly argues otherwise.  A Tundra Swan observed 2829 August 1982 near Glasgow, Barren County, Kentucky (Russell Starr; Stamm 1983a) was a remarkably early fall migrant if accurately identified.  A swan sp. observed 24 January 2001February 2001 on Dale Hollow Lake, Clay County, Tennessee (Danny Stone fide Terry M. Campbell) probably belonged to this species; if so, its presence would have extended the Regional period of occurrence for Tundra Swan.  The only spring record Regionally, if correct, involved 24 Tundra Swans reported at a small wooded pond in Cookeville, Putnam County, Tennessee, 18 March and 2 April 1990 (Jospeh W. Wahl; Stedman 1993).  All of these records are treated as hypothetical here.

Check-lists of Birds for the Counties of the UCR

Check-lists of the birds of each county of the Upper Cumberland Region may be viewed by clicking on the links below. For each county, there are two check-lists: one list that shows the species that have been observed and where possible documented in the county within the larger list for the entire Region; and one list that includes only the species observed in the county with annotations for the date and observers for at least one sighting (the ultimate goal of the latter list will be to include annotations for the very first known Regional observation of each species in that county; this goal is probably one that will take many years to complete, if completion is even a possibility). To see if the species discussed in this species account has been observed in a county, click below or click on the link for the Map of UCR Distribution near the top of the page.
