            Information provided on 69 species observed 14-20 June 1937. PEFA noted at four sites, one with an eyrie;
        GOEA, including old nest, mentioned near Jamestown from earlier years; RCWO found in three groups; 2

rescued the bird from water into which it had inadvertently flown while carrying a "small, red jersey pig."

Ganier, A. F. 1951c. Cerulean Warblers and Redstarts Remove Their Nests. Migrant 22 (3):
43–44.

            Describes one AMRE nest and two CERW nests found in Standing Stone S. P., Overton Co., 12-17 May
        1951. The former was placed 18 feet up in an ironwood and contained one egg; five days later every vestige of
        the nest had disappeared. The latter nests were placed 65 feet up in basswood and 60 feet up in white oak;
        both nests were placed on horizontal limbs well out from main trunks; the latter nest was completely gone five
        days later.

            Mentions record of 1 PUGA at 4-acre pond near Morrison (southwest of McMinnville), Warren Co., 17 May
        1936, but focuses on birds found at 12-acre lake 11 miles northeast of McMinnville, Warren Co., 30 July 1952,
        including a pair of PUGA near empty nest and 3 KIRA.

            Comments on observations of a RCWO cavity found in the Catoosa WMA, Cumberland Co., 9 June 1961
        and cavities found 2-6 May 1962 in that vicinity; a history of sightings in Tennessee is provided, including
        records by Rhoads (1895) at Allardt, Fentress Co., and between Allardt and Rugby, Morgan Co., and by TOS

        nests) and Pulaski (2 nests) counties are provided, including type of nest site, cover type, degree and aspect of
        slope, and land use at the sites.

Hardy, F. C. 1951. Notes on Turkey Reproduction in McCreary County, Kentucky. Kentucky
Warbler 27 (2): 19–20.

            Following reintroduction of 21 female and 14 male WITU from December 1946 to September 1949, searches
        for reproductive evidence were undertaken during July 1949, when tracks of juvenile WITU were discovered, and
        during summer 1950, when an abandoned nest and an adult with two young were found.

Hassler, R. [C.] 1968. An Account of a Ruffed Grouse with a Tractor. Migrant 39 (1): 17.

            Narrates several encounters during mid-1960s between a Ruffed Grouse and farm vehicles; speculates on
        causes of these interactions on the part of the grouse; provides a photo; location not specified but was near
        Byrdstown, Pickett Co., TN (R. C. Hassler pers. com.).

Cites five records (2 in fall, 3 in spring) from late 1960s; earliest spring (5 March) at that time much
later than has occurred in first years of 21st century, but small sample makes comparison difficult.

        forest at that time, may be viewed.

            Describe sites in western Pickett Co. where birders might go afield. Mention singing BEWRs in Byrdstown;
        the SACR migration (much changed temporally since the time of this publication) near Lovelady; birding at
        Obey River Park (now Obey River Recreation Area); and a fall SNEG record. All these sites are along an
        automobile "birding trail" described by the authors.

Discusses hacking of juvenile BAEAs at Dale Hollow Lake from 1987–1990 (32 hacked) and projected for
1991–1993 (10). Projects 8 nests to occur near this site by 1998, a target not entirely attained by 2004.

            Describing this work as a "landmark reference book," the reviewer, who also reviewed the work in
        manuscript, provides a balanced description of the sections of this work. Some criticisms offered by the
        reviewer are valid (e.g., the inconsistency of defining rare species as those with two or fewer records but
        labeling some species with 3–7 records as rare), but others seem far-fetched (e.g., the appendix on the
        "Estimated Size of Breeding Populations of Birds of the BSF and OWSR" is claimed to represent only the
        "intuition and experience" of the authors and not to be based on "factual data," but a look through the book's
        other appendices will quickly disabuse the discerning reader of this claim; the data in these appendices, in
        conjunction with knowledge of the size of these parks, allow reasonably valid extrapolations of the size of
        breeding populations in the parks to be made; even if this were not the case, estimates based solely on
        intuition and experience are still of some value as a starting point for further refinement. But the prime example
        of the reviewer's quixotic criticism is his view that the book should have labeled species that both migrate
        through and breed in the parks as transients rather than summer residents, a suggestion that considerably
        violates standard methods of defining bird status).

        claim, they were probably somewhat surprised by an indisputable nesting record in Jackson Co., Tennessee, in
        1993 (Witt 1993b), albeit the Jackson Co. nest resulted from a pair that included an eagle hacked in Georgia.
