Introduction

Weather in the Region (Figure 1) began with a week of fairly cool conditions 815 August as a result of the passage of a cool front about 67 August; after 15 August conditions became warm and quite dry with little or no precipitation falling at most Regional sites until 26 August, when remnants of Tropical Depression Fay brushed by the Region, bringing much needed rainfall for a couple of days and somewhat cooler than normal temperatures for a week.  Dry conditions again prevailed throughout September, a spell that was broken only 78 October when about an inch of much needed rain fell on the Region. October continued fairly dry with only a few light rains providing moisture during this period.  Early November saw two periods of light rain fall, but no drenching systems passed through the Region during that period.

Records of rare species are noted in bold-faced red below.

Fall Bird Counts and BirdBlitzes provide many of the quantitative data on which an assessment of the Regional birdlife may be made during autumn; access to these data, collected in three Regional counties,  is available via links at the following page of this website:

Early and late dates of arrival and departure for migrant species in the Region this autumn may be viewed at the following page of this website:

Acknowledgments

Thanks are extended to all the field observers whose records are cited below.  Observers who were able to support their sightings with photographs are especially thanked for their submissions.

Waterfowl through Gallinaceous Species

An adult blue morph Snow Goose at the Stone Farm and later at the Celina Wastewater Treatment Plant, Clay Co., TN, was the first to be reported Regionally this fall when noted 2 November 2008 (SJS, EKL, DLR); three blues at Clifty Pond, Pulaski Co., KY, 27 November 2008 (RMD) were considered somewhat unusual there.

Earliest Blue-winged Teal this fall Regionally were 3 at Thurston's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 6 August 2008 (RMD).

The first Northern Shoveler of the season Regionally appeared at Lexus Pond, Putnam Co., TN, 5 September 2008 (SJS, BHS).

Earliest Redheads this season Regionally were two on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, 17 October 2008 (DLR).

At least four male Surf Scoters in a flock of 20 scoters, perhaps all this species, were noted near the Wolf Creek Dam, Russell Co., KY, 30 November 2008 (RMD), the first report of the fall and about the 40th all-time for the Region.

A female Black Scoter on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY, 29 October 2008 (DLR) provided the 13th Regional record.

Three flocks totaling 475+ Red-breasted Mergansers at the Wolf Creek Dam, Lake Cumberland, Russell Co., KY, 30 November 2008 (RMD) constituted one of the highest Regional counts ever.

Loons through Ibises

On 11 November 2008 a Red-throated Loon was observed off of the end of Rowena Rd., Lake Cumberland, Russell Co., KY (RMD photo), the first record for that county and the 11th overall for the UCR; another Red-throated Loon was photographed at Plum Point, Green River Lake, Adair Co., KY, 17 November 2008 (RMD photo), providing at least the fourth record from that county.

An Eared Grebe on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY, 6 September 2008 (DLR) was just the 12th Regionally to be reported.

Providing just the 7th Regional record, an American White Pelican was observed at the Fishing Creek Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 11 November 2008 (RMD photo).

See the Summer 2008 UCR Bird Report for records of long-legged waders found in the Region during the early part of the period of post-breeding wandering.

Eight Great Egrets tallied in White Co., TNincluding 1 at Boiling Pond and 7 at Randolph Pond7 August 2008 (SJS, EKL) provided a moderately high count of this heron Regionally; an even better count was made in Adair Co., KY, 4 September 2008 (RMD) when 11 were present. A Great Egret at Clifty Pond, Pulaski Co., KY, 20 November 2008 (RMD) was latest this season Regionally.

The latest Little Blue Heron of the season Regionally was noted along Snake Creek, Green Rover Lake, Adair Co., KY, 13 August 2008 (RMD). An immature Little Blue Heron was photographed at Burns Lake near the Bledsoe County High School, Bledsoe Co., TN, 4 August 2009 (DJS photo), the first of the season to be reported Regionally and the first ever for that county.

Two Black-crowned Night-Herons along the Green River, Adair Co., KY, 4 September 2008 (RMD) were among very few reported Regionally this season.

Seldom reported around the Region, a juvenile/immature Yellow-crowned Night-Heron was noted at a small pond on Allen Hollow Rd., Putnam Co., TN, 5 August 2008 (JCF photo), a circumstance suggestive of continued local breeding in that county, one of just a few counties in the Region with a known breeding population of this scarce night-heron.

The second Regional appearance of a Plegadis sp. took place 7 October 2008 when an immature of this genus was noted at Cane Creek Park, Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN (GKE, NSL); the first Regional appearance of a member of this genus occurred 17 May 2004 in the far western part of Putnam Co. (or the far eastern part of Smith County, or both).

Diurnal Raptors through Cranes

Found fairly far from any known nest site in the Region were single Ospreys at Rock Island State Park, Warren/White counties, TN, 7 August 2008 (EKL, SJS) and at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 9 August 2008 (RMD); these were probably early migrants, if not birds dispersing from one of the few known Regional nest sites.

A male Northern Harrier was observed at the Hackworth Farm, Rt. 62, east of Monterey, Putnam Co., TN, 17 August 2008 (SJS), about a month earlier than the previous early fall arrival date for that raptor in that county.

A juvenile Golden Eagle at Mt. Zion, Pulaski Co., KY, 16 November 2008 (RMD) provided the only record of the fall Regionally.

A female or immature Merlin was noted 27 September 2008 during the Cumberland County Fall BirdBlitz in Dale Hollow Lake Resort Park, both Clinton (DM) and Cumberland (BPB et al.) counties, the first record for that park and for each of those counties.  A latish Merlin was observed at Lake Hiawatha, Cumberland Co., TN, 12 November 3008 (DJS); see the Winter 20082009 UCR Bird Report for a probable continuation of this record.

The (probably injured) American Coot noted last season at Randolph Pond, Walter Stone Rd., White Co., TN, was still present at that site 2 August 2008 (SJS, EKL). Three coots on Lake Tansi, Cumberland Co., TN, 2 September 2008 (EKL, DJS) were quite early if migrants, which was probably the case.

See Table 1 (below) for a list of all reported sightings of migrant Sandhill Cranes in the Region this fall.

A Whooping Crane was observed migrating south with a small (21+) flock of Sandhills 30 November 2008 near the Wolf Creek Dam, Lake Cumberland, Russell Co., KY (RMD), the first record for that county.  Nominally not yet a "countable" species, the Whooper seems highly likely to establish a stable migratory population in the East soon (or to have already done so); its presence with migrating Sandhills ought to be a major factor in not promoting a hunting season on Sandhills in KY and TN.

Shorebirds through Terns

See the Summer 2008 UCR Bird Report for records of shorebirds found in the Region during early "fall."

An adult American Golden-Plover at Cooley's Pond and 2 adults at Thurston's Pondboth Wayne Co., KY, 3 September 2008 (RMD)were the first to be reported Regionally this season.

The first Semipalmated Plover of the fall Regionally showed up at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 6 August 2008 (RMD); 6 Semipals in Adair Co., KY, 4 September 2008 (RMD) were the first recorded in that county.

A basic-plumaged American Avocet was photographed at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 10 November 2008 (RMD photo), the first record for that county and 10th overall for the Region.

The earliest report of Least Sandpiper during the season Regionally involved 2 along the Green River, Adair Co., KY, 5 August 2008 (RMD).

Two White-rumped Sandpipers1 at Casey Creek and 1 along the Green Riverin Adair Co., KY, 4 September 2008 (RMD) were quite unusual.

A juvenile Stilt Sandpiper at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 22 August 2008 (RMD) was earliest reported Regionally this fall, while 42 at that site 16 October 2008 (RMD photo) represented, by far, an all-time Regional high count.

A Buff-breasted Sandpiper at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 6 September 2008 (RMD) was just the second in that county, the 8th Regionally overall, and the first reported this season in the Region.

Two juvenile Short-billed Dowitchers, one at Casey Creek and the other along the Green River, were earliest ever reported Regionally, as well as earliest reported Regionally this fall, when found in Adair Co., KY, 22 August 2008 (RMD); they also provided the all-time Regional high count for this windbird, a record that stood only until 6 September 2008 when three Short-bills were counted at the same sites in that county (RMD).

An American Woodcock was heard performing its courtship flight 20 November 2008 at City Lake, Putnam Co., TN (BHS), getting a head start of the 2009 breeding season.

A juvenile Wilson's Phalarope at Thurston's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 25 August 2008 (RMD) provided the 2nd record for that county and just the 4th Regionally.

First ever to be recorded in the Region but long anticipated, a second-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull was photographed on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY, 8 October 2008 (DLR photo).

A juvenile Caspian Tern at Casey Creek, Russell Co., KY, and 3 unaged Caspians at the Wolf Creek Dam, Russell Co., KY, both 26 August 2008 (RDM) were earliest reported this season Regionally.

The first Black Tern of the fall Regionally was noted at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 22 August 2008 (RMD); another was at the same site 28 August 2008 (RMD), while 2 were present  there on 1 September 2008 (RMD) and 3 on 4/6 September 2008 (RMD); 3 visited Plum Point, Adair Co., KY, 26 & 28 August 2008 (RMD); 14 were at Lake Cumberland, Russell Co., KY, 26 August 2008 (RMD); and 50+, a new Regional high count, were present on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, Kentucky, 6 September 2008 (DLR).

See the Summer 2008 UCR Bird Report for the earliest report of Forster's Tern this "fall."

Doves through Shrike

A roost of 1100 Chimney Swifts in Somerset, Pulaski Co., KY, 13 September 2008 (RMD) was one of the largest Regionally on record.

The banded adult female Rufous Hummingbird that spent the last two (and possibly three) winters on Creed Rd., Van Buren Co., TN, returned to that site 12 August 2008 (JW, BW)a new early fall arrival date for the Region; this female was recaptured 6 November and its band number verified (MA); see the Winter 20082009 UCR Bird Report for information about its continued stay in the Region during the ensuing winter.  An adult male Rufous Hummingbird was noted at a feeder on Aspen Dr., Putnam Co., TN, 15 September-30 November 2008 (SH photo [16 September 2008]), establishing a new early fall arrival date in that county, making at least four different fall seasons when an individual of this species has appeared at this site, providing the 11th record of this increasingly apparent western hummer in the Region, and making the first appearance of this species on the Putnam County FBC; this male Rufous was banded 28 September 2008 (MA); see the Winter 20082009 UCR Bird Report for information about its continued stay in this Region during the ensuing winter.

The only report of Olive-sided Flycatcher this fall Regionally involved a single in Barren River Lake State Resort Park, Barren Co., KY, 17 September 2008 (DLR).

A well described Western Kingbird was noted in Scott Co., TN, 10 August 2008 (BSD reporting via eBird), the first record for that county and just the third for the Region; the observer is a native of Scott County now residing in Austin, TX, where this species is fairly common.

Four adult Scissor-tailed Flycatchers2 at Brushy Cemetery off of Old Rt. 28 and 2 at Limestone Hill near the east end of Ninemile Crossroadwere found 9 August 2008 in Bledsoe Co., TN (SJS, JC photo, AF, NEB).

See Appendix B (below) for a list of all Regional records of Loggerhead Shrike obtained during the season. Particularly interesting was a sighting of 6 shrikes, including 2 adults and 4 juveniles/immatures, on Oxier Hollow Rd., Bledsoe Co., TN, 9 August 2008 (SJS, JC photo, AF, NEB), a likely result of a successful second brood by this species.

The last Blue-headed Vireo of the fall was detected on Perkins Rd., Morgan Co., TN, 28 November 2008 (SJS, EKL), a fairly late date but not unprecedentedly so, there being several winter records of this species in in the Region during  the past decade.

Jay through Waxwing

A visit to the Lillydale campground, Dale Hollow Lake, Clay Co., TN, 2 August 2008 (SJS, EKL, ML, DRB, CW) resulted in an estimate of 40,000 Purple Martins being present at the roost on the evening of that date; this figure is approximate and may be off by 10,000 or more either way, but even if the actual number of martins present was lower than the estimate noted above, the number at the roost was still considerable, indeed an Upper Cumberland-style passle; incidentally, a visit to the roost during the late July (TS fide CDW) led the observer to the conclusion that the number of birds at the roost was at least as great as it has been during the past few years when he has visited during late summer.  The roost in Gorin Park, Glasgow, Barren Co., KY, visited 6 August 2008 (LC), was estimated to contain about 1800 martins on that date, considerably down from numbers estimated at that site during late summer 2007.

Counts of 1000 and 400 Tree Swallows at Plum Point and Casey Creek, respectively, both Adair Co., KY, and both 8 October 2008 (RMD) were impressive totals of that swallow.

An extremely late Northern Rough-winged Swallow appeared at the Waitsboro Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 10 November 2008 (RMD), the latest fall departure date for that county and perhaps for the Region.

Red-breasted Nuthatches did not irrupt into the Region in any appreciable numbers this season.  The first report of the fall was made 20 September 2008 when 2 were noted on the Putnam County FBC (BHS); another was heard briefly 26 September 2008 at Eagle Point, Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park, Cumberland Co., KY (SJS, DLR); very few or no other reports were made during the remainder of the season.

A Bewick's Wren was described from Mason Grissom Rd., Warren Co., TN, 5 October 2008 (SNM), the first record from that county in 33 years (that I am aware of) and the only sighting this fall.

The Purple Martin roost at the Lillydale campground, Dale Hollow Lake, Clay Co., TN, contained about 10,000 European Starlings 2 August 2008 (SJS, EKL, ML, DRB, CW) in addition to a great many martins.  Evidence of roosting behavior by starlings so early in the fall has been scanty in the UCR.

Warblers

The Region's first Tennessee Warbler this fall was identified on Leffle Webb Rd., Cumberland Co., TN, 28 August 2008 (EKL).

Providing a new early fall arrival date for Putnam Co., TN, a Magnolia Warbler was observed at City Lake 12 August 2008 (BHS).

A male Black-throated Blue Warbler at Barnes Hollow, Putnam Co., TN, 3 September 2008 (RWS) tied the early fall arrival date in that county; a male noted near, but not in, Rock Island State Park 4 October 2008 (SJS) during the FBC in White Co., TN, was the first ever reported in that county.

A singing Louisiana Waterthrush at Rock Island State Park, Warren Co., TN, 7 August 2008 (SJS, EKL) was of interest, as Regional records of singing by this warbler so late in the breeding season are scarce.

A male Mourning Warbler was observed at City Lake, Putnam Co., TN, 11 August 2008 (SJS), providing a new all-time early fall arrival date for Putnam County and for the Region; it remained until at least the next day at that site (BHS).

The first Wilson's Warbler of the fall Regionally showed up on Leffle Webb Rd., Cumberland Co., TN, 29 August 2008 (EKL), also providing the first county sighting on record; another at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 4 September 2008 (RMD) was the first to be recorded in that county, as was another found during the FBC in White Co., TN, 4 October 2008 (DAD).

Sparrows through Siskin

A Clay-colored Sparrow was photographed on Nicholson Dr., Cumberland Co., TN, 29 November 2008 (EKL photo, DJS photo, JEM); it constituted the third Regional record.

Thirty Vesper Sparrows on and near the Stone Farm, Clay Co., TN, 2 November 2008 (DLR photo, EKL, SJS) represented the first to be documented for that county and a quite respectable number of this species Regionally.

A late Lincoln's Sparrow was noted at a feeding station on City Lake, Putnam Co., TN, 30 November 2008 (BHS), but winter records of this sparrow in the Region have also occurred.

A Dickcissel was still singing on Frank's Ferry Rd., White Co., TN, 2 August 2008 (SJS, EKL); few records of late season singing by this species are available for dates falling in August or later.  A late Dickcissel was on County House Rd., DeKalb Co., TN, 17 October 2008 (SJS, JuF).

The Purple Martin roost at Lillydale campground, Dale Hollow Lake, Clay Co., TN, contained several dozen Red-winged Blackbirds and several hundred Common Grackles in addition to tens of thousands of martins 2 August 2008 (SJS, EKL, ML, DRB, CW), evidence of early-in-the-season flocking/roosting behavior by these icterids.

The first Rusty Blackbirds reported this fall were noted on Putnam Dr., Putnam Co., TN, 14 November 2008 (TMS); see the Winter 20082009 UCR Bird Report for a listing of all sightings during this and the next two seasons.

The first Brewer's Blackbirds ever reported in Morgan Co., TN, were four, including one dark-eyed female, noted on Rome Rd. 28 November 2008 (EKL, SJS).

A Purple Finch on Leffle Webb Rd., Cumberland Co., TN, 26 October 2008 (SJS, EKL) was the first of the season to be reported; by mid-November small numbers were being reported from several Regional counties.

The first Pine Siskin of the season was noted 20 October 2008 in Barren Co., KY (DLR), presaging a modest invasion of the Region; by mid-November flocks of 20-50 were being reported from several Regional counties, but by the end of the period, siskin numbers had decreased somewhat at most sites.
