Central Node for UCR Foray in Cumberland County, Tennessee—29 May–4 June 2010
An adult Eastern Bluebird feeding a fledged young at a home in Crossville, Cumberland County, Tennessee, 27 May 2010; photo Ralph Wiggers. The breeding code for this behavior would probably best be FL (fledged young) which is a bit more certain evidence of breeding than FY (adult with food for young), although the behavior depicted in this photo is really some sort of combination of the two codes. |
A foray was conducted in Cumberland County, Tennessee, 29 May–4 June 2010, the second bird survey of its kind to take place in that county, the first such event having taken place in 1985 as preparation for the Tennessee Breeding Bird Atlas project.
Observers taking part in the 2010 UCR Foray in Cumberland County are listed in Table 2 at the page for Raw Data (link below).
The general protocol for conducting a foray in the UCR, as well as the specific instructions for UCR Forays, may be consulted at pages accessible via these links:

Cumberland County, Tennessee, mainly encompasses land lying on the Cumberland Plateau, though the northern end of Sequatchie Valley also lies in the south-central section of the county.
To see a map (Figure 3) showing the 75 "blocks" (i.e., areas consisting of all or part of one-sixth of a USGS quadrangle) that were surveyed during the 2010 UCR Foray in Cumberland County, to access a page listing the names of the blocks and the observers who covered them, or to see a map (Figure 4) displaying the 52 blocks in Cumberland County that were surveyed during the Tennessee Breeding Bird Atlas (BBA) (Nicholson 1997), click on one of the links below:
During the 2010 UCR Foray in Cumberland County 115 species of breeding birds, 1 breeding form, and 4 migrants were found; during the BBA project 105 breeding species were recorded in Cumberland County. Of the 105 species detected during the BBA, 101 overlapped with species found during the 2010 UCR Foray, and four species (Pied-billed Grebe, Osprey, Black-billed Cuckoo, and Loggerhead Shrike) were observed during the BBA project but not during the 2010 UCR Foray. Fourteen breeding species and one breeding form, as well as four migrants, were recorded during the 2010 UCR Foray but not during the BBA project.

The focal species of the 2010 UCR Foray in Cumberland County included the Brown-headed Nuthatch, the Golden-winged Warbler, and the Dickcissel, with the last two of those species being detected during the foray. Some other species of interest during the foray included the following: Ruffed Grouse, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Veery, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Baltimore Oriole, Canada Warbler, Bachman's Sparrow, and Henslow's Sparrow; all but the last three species were noted during the foray.
