Introduction

August weather in the Region (Figure 1) was normally warm with somewhat less than normal rainfall.  Early September witnessed a cool spell from the 4th to the11th of the month. Early September and mid-September were less warm than those periods have been during recent years; rainfall was below normal until 23 September 2006 when three inches or more fell across most counties of the Region. The first frost was experienced during the night of 12/13 October, followed by two more cold nights that dealt a blow to much tender vegetation around the Region.  The month ended with several periods of moderately heavy rainfall, making it one of the wetter Octobers in recent years. Early and mid-November was punctuated by several brief periods of cold, wet weather, while the end of the month witnessed a week-long spell of balmy conditions (with daytime temperatures frequently reaching the low to mid-70s F); this period of fine weather was abruptly ended by the passage of a front from the northwest bringing extremely windy, cold conditions on the night of November 30/December 1.

Numerous records of rare species, including one observed for the first time ever in the Region, are noted in bold-faced red below.

Fall Bird Counts provide most of the quantitative data on which an assessment of the Regional birdlife may be judged; access to these data is available via links at the following page:

Early and late dates of arrival and departure for migrant species this autumn may be viewed at the following page:

Waterfowl through Gallinaceous Species

Eight Greater White-fronted Geese at the Stone Farm, Clay Co., TN, 1 November 2006 (TMC) were perhaps just a small part of a larger group seen a day or so earlier by another observer (DS) at the same site; this sighting provided the 12th Regional record and was earliest ever during fall in the Region.

Earliest Snow Geese this fall Regionally were 130 flying over Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY, 31 October 2006 (DLR); this was quite a large flock for being so far east.

A Mute Swan of undetermined origin was noted 19 August 2006 at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY (RMD); the date of this sighting was somewhat earlier than expected of a migrant.

A Gadwall at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 11 October 2006 (RMD) was the first noted Regionally this fall; fourteen showed up at the Floating Mill Recreation Area, Center Hill Lake, Putnam Co., TN, 13 October 2006 (SJS).

The first American Wigeon of the fall Regionally appeared 31 October 2006 on Barren River Rerservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY (DLR).

Four American Black Ducks were more than a month earlier than the previous early fall arrival date in Putnam Co., TN, when found during the Putnam County FBC 16 September 2006 at the Hackworth Farm (BHS).

Five Blue-winged Teal at the Randolph Pond, Walter Stone Rd., White Co., TN, 24 August 2006 (DAD) were the first of the fall Regionally to be reported.

The first Northern Shoveler of the season Regionally appeared at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 21 October 2006 (RMD).

Northern Pintails did not show up this fall Regionally until 21 October 2006 when two males were found at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY (RMD); a single was present 1 November 2006 on Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY (DLR).

Earliest this fall Regionally were three Green-winged Teal at Cane Creek Park, Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN, 22 September 2006 (SJS), somewhat late for the first report of the fall.

The first Redhead of the fall Regionally showed up on Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY, 25 October 2006 (DLR).

Earliest this fall Regionally, a male Ring-necked Duck was noted at Lake Hiawatha, Cumberland Co., TN, 21 October 2006 (JEM); by 11 November 2006 at least 900 Ring-necks were counted on that lake (JEM), one of the largest concentrations ever detected in the Region and especially notable for being a record from the Cumberland Plateau.

Earliest Greater (1) and Lesser scaup Regionally appeared 31 October 2006 on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY (DLR).

The fall's earliest sighting of Surf Scoter was made at the Waitsboro Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 12 November 2006 (RMD) when two were present; six Surf Scoters, including 3 adult males and 1 adult female, were noted at Skaggs Creek, Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY, 15 November 2006 (DLR).

Single Black Scoters were noted at the Waitsboro Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY (RMD), and at Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY (DLR), both 12 November 2006, providing the first records of the fall in the Region and just the 9th and 10th records ever Regionally.

Earliest Bufflehead this fall Regionally were found on Lake Tansi, Cumberland Co., TN, 28 October 2006 (JEM).

The first Red-breasted Mergansers of the season Regionally were three female-plumaged birds at Mystic View, Wayne Co., KY, 30 October 2006 (RMD).

Earliest this fall Regionally was a Ruddy Duck on the lake at Cane Creek Park, Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN, 13 October 2006 (SJS).

Ruffed Grouse are seldom reported, so one near Mayland, Cumberland Co., TN, 21 September 2006 (JEM) was good to hear about.

Loons through Night-Herons

Two basic-plumaged Common Loons at the end of Rowena Rd. near the Wolf Creek Dam, Lake Cumberland, Russell Co., KY, 24 September 2006 (RMD) were the earliest reported around the Region this fall. Counts of 160 on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY, 31 October 2006 (DLR), 86 on Lake Cumberland, Russell Co., KY, 1 November 2006 (RMD), and 29 on Lake Cumberland, Wayne Co., KY, 1 November 2006 (RMD) were the first moderate-sized concentrations of the fall to be reported.

A Pied-billed Grebe found 9 August 2006 at the Fishing Creek Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY (RMD), was earliest ever during fall in that county; a fair number of summering Pied-bills over the last few decades in the Region obscures the issue of early fall arrival (and late spring departure) at the Regional level.  An influx of Pied-bills was perhaps indicated by 22 found at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY (RMD), and 35 found at Lake Tansi, Cumberland Co., TN (JEM), both 21 October 2006.

The first Horned Grebes of the season Regionally included 6 at the Floating Mill Recreation Area, Center Hill Lake, DeKalb Co., TN, 13 October 2006 (SJS).

The first Red-necked Grebe ever for Pulaski Co., KY, appeared 4-24 November 2006 near and at the Waitsboro Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland (RMD photo [5 November 2006]); this record was just the 2nd Regionally, the other having been found in Barren Co., KY, during January 2002 (see Winter 2001-2002 UCR Bird Report).

For the earliest Double-crested Cormorant of the season Regionally, see the Summer 2006 UCR Bird Report; a cormorant in Pulaski Co., KY, 12 August 2006 (RMD) was earliest ever during fall in that county; another cormorant foraging in a pond at the intersection of Parkhurst Rd. and Bug Tussle Rd. southwest of Winkler's Chapel, Macon Co., TN, 20 August 2006 (SJS, WAW) was probably the first of its kind to be reported with details from that county; a flock of 50 at Mt. Zion, Pulaski Co., KY, 11 September 2006 (RMD) was a large flock for that date in the Region.

An American Bittern near Mark, Pulaski Co., KY, 12 October 2006 (CSN, RMD, CGH) was the first of its kind to be found in that county during fall, as well as the first of the season Regionally; this record was also just the 15th ever Regionally.  Another, possibly injured, bittern was found on a brushy hillside on Flynn Creek Rd., Jackson Co., TN, 15 October 2006 (MJH); it was the first ever to be reported from that county and 16th Regionally.  Still another American Bittern found in a small pond on Rt. 62, western Fentress Co., TN, 18 November 2006 (BHS) was the first for that county and 17th Regionally.

The last Great Egrets of the fall Regionally included singles noted at Cooley's and Thurston's ponds, Wayne Co., KY, both 18 November 2006 (RMD); other late egrets involved two flying over Jackson St., Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN, 5 November 2006 (KLM) and two others photographed at Evans Lake, Cumberland Co., TN, 13 October 2006 (NEB photo).

The single immature Little Blue Heron found at the end of last season at Rock Island State Park, Warren/White counties, TN, was joined by three more immature Little Blues 12 August 2006 (DAD); this number was reduced to two by 21 August 2006 (SJS). Other Little Blues reported this season included an immature at Thurston's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 19 August 2006 (RMD) and two immatures at Randolph Pond, Walter Stone Rd., White Co., TN, 21 August 2006 (SJS); the immatures at the latter site were still present 2 September 2006 (DAD). One immature Little Blue Heron was observed at a lake in the Mud Creek area of Warren Co., TN, 2-3 September 2006 (SNM, NPM); this site is about 8-10 km from Rock Island State Park.

A basic-plumaged Cattle Egret was noted on Free State Rd., Jackson Co., TN, 22 October 2006 (SJS, WAW), the first record for that county and the latest report this season Regionally, as well as the 25th record for the Region.

The last Green Heron of the season Regionally appeared at Clifty Pond, Pulaski Co., KY, 16 October 2006 (RMD).

Diurnal Raptors through Cranes

Five Bald Eagles in Pulaski Co., KY, 13 October 2006 (RMD), including two adults and a near adult at the Lake Cumberland WMA, represented a fairly high count for that county; surely somewhere around Lake Cumberland there is now a nest.

The first Northern Harrier of the fall Regionally appeared on Student's Home Rd., DeKalb Co., TN, 10 September 2006 (JuF).

A noteworthy count of 27 American Kestrels was made during 6.3 hours of observation in eastern Macon Co., TN, 20 August 2006 (SJS, WAW); given the date of this count, these birds were all undoubtedly local breeders or their progeny.  Because breeding kestrels have undergone dramatic decreases in numbers in some Regional counties, notably Putnam County (see results of Putnam County Summer Roadside Survey since 1991), it is good to know that late summer kestrel numbers remain high in some less populated counties of the Region; 13 kestrels were counted nearby in southeastern Monroe Co., KY, 27 August 2006 (SJS, WAW) during 7.2 hours of observation; the count of 57 kestrels tallied during the Macon County Fall BirdBlitz was an impressive one, though the total may have been increased by some influx of wintering birds.

A Merlin at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 21 September 2006 (RMD) was the first of the season to be reported Regionally; another Merlin showed up in Barren Co., KY, 21 November 2006 (DLR).

The first American Coot of the season Regionally showed up on the fairly early date of 22 September 2006 at Dillon Pond, Livingston, Overton Co., TN (RC); next earliest coots were four on the lake at Cane Creek Park, Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN, 11 October 2006 (SJS); by 21 October 2006 about 400 coots were present on Lake Tansi, Cumberland Co., TN (JEM).

Six flocks of Sandhill Cranes were reported from five counties around the Region--Barren, KY (DLR), Monroe, KY (JT fide TMC), Pickett, TN (RCH), Cumberland, TN (MM, DR), and Morgan, TN (MEH)--25 October 2006, the first day of the season when this spectacular migrant was reported; see Appendix A (below) for a list of all reported crane sightings this fall.

This year's "training flight" of 18 juvenile Whooping Cranes reached Adair Co., KY, 21 November 2006; they were observed 22 November 2006 at the Wolf Creek Dam, Russell Co., KY (RMD), from whence they flew on the same day to Cumberland Co., TN, where they remained through the end of the period due to unfavorable high winds aloft; see the Winter 2006-2007 UCR Bird Report for details about the date the training flight departed the Region.

Shorebirds through Terns

Earliest arrival dates in the Region this "fall" for several species of shorebirds are listed in the Summer 2006 UCR Bird Report.

The first  Semipalmated Plover of the season Regionally was found at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 4 August 2006 (RMD); seven Semis were counted at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 27 August 2006 (RMD), the high count for the season Regionally.

Two very rare fall-occurring White-rumped Sandpipers visited Fishing Creek, Pulaski Co., KY, 20 September 2006 (RMD) with one still present the next day (RMD photo); this was the first fall record ever Regionally and the first record with a photograph for the Region.

A juvenile Baird's Sandpiper at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 29 August 2006 (RMD photo) was earliest Regionally this season, earliest ever during fall in Pulaski County, and just the sixth ever Regionally.

The first Dunlin of the season Regionally appeared at the Fishing Creek Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 13 October 2006 (RMD).

A juvenile Stilt Sandpiper peacefully photographed at the Fishing Creek Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 9 August 2006 (RMD photo) was the earliest this fall Regionally and earliest ever in that county; it also provided just the 14th record ever for the Region.  Two Stilt Sandpipers were noted at the same site 27 August and what were deemed to be two different birds 4 September and four more (probably including the two seen two days earlier) 6 September 2006 (RMD), providing the 15th and 16th Regional records, as well as the all-time Regional high count of this species on the last date; latest ever during fall in Pulaski Co., KY, and Regionally was a juvenile at the Fishing Creek Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 12,14, 16, & 18 October 2006 (RMD).

The earliest Buff-breasted Sandpiper of the fall Regionally showed up at Boiling Pond, White Co., TN, 10 September 2006 (SJS); it was also the first to be recorded in the Tennessee part of the Region and just the sixth ever Regionally, all five other records coming from Pulaski Co., KY.

Quite nicely photographed at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, was a juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher that set a new early fall arrival date in that county when it appeared 4 September 2006 (RMD photo), providing the first record of the fall Regionally and just the eighth ever in the Region, five of the records coming from Pulaski County.

The first Wilson's Snipe of the season Regionally appeared at Randolph Pond, Walter Stone Rd., White Co., TN, 24 August 2006 (DAD), about a month earlier than the early fall arrival date for Pulaski Co., KY, but about two weeks later than the early fall arrival date for Putnam Co., TN.  Eight snipes scattered around five ponds in White Co., TN, 10 September 2006 (SJS) indicated a minor influx into the Region during the cool weather associated with that date.

Two Franklin's Gulls, one adult and one first-year, were on Barren River Reservoir, Barren/Allen counties, KY, 31 October 2006 (DLR), providing just the third record for that county and fourth Regionally.

Earliest this fall Regionally was a Bonaparte's Gull at Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY, 22 October 2006 (DLR, JR); by 6 November 2006 at least 800 were noted in the Mason's Island area of that lake (DLR).

Earliest ever during fall in Pulaski Co., KY and earliest this fall Regionally was a Ring-billed Gull at Fishing Creek 21 September 2006 (RMD).

The first Herring Gulls (2) of the fall Regionally appeared on Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY, 25 October 2006 (DLR).

A Least Tern found, photographed, and observed capturing fish at Clifty Pond, Pulaski Co., KY, 3 August 2006 (RMD photo) was the first ever of its species to be noted in Pulaski County and in the Region.

Black Terns staged a modest invasion of the Region in mid-August with four appearing at Clifty Pond and two at the Fishing Creek Recreation Area, Lake Cumberland, both 18 August 2006 in Pulaski Co., KY (RMD); a single Black Tern was noted at "Dead Cow" Pond on Willie Randolph Rd., White Co., TN, 21 August 2006 (SJS), one of just a few records for that county.  An end-of-August Black Tern showed up at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 27 August 2006 (RMD), and an even later pair of Blacks was present there 20 September 2006 (RMD).

A Common Tern at the lake in Tompkinsville City Park, Monroe Co., KY, 27 August 2006 (SJS photo, WAW), provided the first record for that county and the first sighting Regionally this fall.

The first Forster's Terns of the season Regionally involved two at the Fishing Creek Recreation Area/Pulaski County Park, Pulaski Co., KY, 4 August 2006 (RMD; Palmer-Ball and McNeeley 2007a); eight Forster's were noted at the lake in Tompkinsville City Park, Monroe Co., KY, 27 August 2006 (SJS photo, WAW; Palmer-Ball and McNeeley 2007a), the first record for that county; five Forster's were noted at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 27 August 2006 (RMD). Getting late were two Forster's at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 11 October 2006 (RMD).

Doves through Vireos

Five Eurasian Collared-Doves on Jaybird Rd., Overton Co., TN, 2 September 2006 (WAW, SJS) indicated continuing presence at that site, where collared-doves have been present at least five years; twelve collared-doves in and near Sparta, White Co., TN, 23 September 2006 (BHS) during the White County FBC also indicated continuing presence, and probable population increase, at that site.  Two collared-doves in LaFayette, Macon Co., TN, 30 September 2006 (DAD, SJS) during the Macon County Fall BirdBlitz were the first ever recorded in that county. Three collared-doves in Alexandria, DeKalb Co., TN, 24 October 2006 (DAD) were the first reported from that site, though not the first for DeKalb County. A single collared-dove observed at the Campground Cemetery near Martha Washington Rd., Fentress Co., TN, 18 November 2006 (BHS) was the first for that county, which became the 14th Regional county known to host this self-introduced exotic.

A Barn Owl was noted roosting in a barn near Science Hill, Pulaski Co., KY, 21 August 2006 (RMD), one of few records of this retiring owl for that county; two owls had been observed in the same barn previously by the owner of the barn (fide RMD).  The "traditional" Barn Owl site in Putnam Co., TN, hosted one owl 9 September 2006 (DAD) and two during the FBC in that county 16 September 2006 (DAD).

Twenty Eastern Screech-Owls were tallied 23 September 2006 during the White County FBC, perhaps the largest one-day, one-county total of this common owl ever accumulated in the history of the Region, but surely a record that can be eclipsed by a determined effort from several parties on a FBC (or CBC) in the future.

Unprecedentedly early during fall in the Region and providing just the 11th Regional record was a Short-eared Owl found entangled in, and injured by, a fence on the Gore Farm near Carthage, Smith Co., TN, 15 October 2006 (Charles and Audrey Elrod fide LB); the injured owl was taken to a rehabilitator (LB) but died before it could be seen by a veterinarian (specimen to be donated to the Biology Department at TTU; KS photo); the next earliest Regional fall record ever obtained was 23 November 1995 in Pulaski Co., KY.

A Common Nighthawk in Somerset, Pulaski Co., KY, 17 November 2006 (RMD) was latest this fall Regionally and latest ever in that county.

A singing Eastern Whip-poor-will near Lancing, Morgan Co., TN, 17 September 2006 (LS) was the latest reported Regionally this season.

A flock of 300 Chimney Swifts at the Monterey High School, Monterey, Putnam Co., TN, 12 September 2006 (JCF, RCF) was the largest reported this season Regionally, but it did not quite eclipse the high count (320) in that county.

A late Ruby-throated Hummingbird was reported 29 October 2006 in Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN (BD), tying the late fall departure date there, but an unidentified hummer with features indicating it was probably an immature male Ruby-throat was noted 31 October 2006 (BHS) and 4 November 2006 at City Lake in the same county (SJS, BHS); this hummer was seen again 5-9 November 2006 (BHS, SJS) and determined to be a Ruby-throat, establishing a new late fall departure date for that county and one of the latest fall departure dates for this hummer Regionally.  However, an unidentified female-plumaged hummingbird that may have been a Ruby-throat stayed at Woodlawn Ave., Jamestown, Fentress Co., TN, until 30 November 2006 (LL); see the Winter 2006-2007 UCR Bird Report for additional details about this bird's stay in the Region.

A Selasphorus sp. (later determined to be a Rufous Hummingbird) was present during the latter end of the season (perhaps from as early as mid-October onward) on Creed Rd., Van Buren Co., TN (BW, JW); see Winter 2006-2007 UCR Bird Report for details about the banding of this bird.

As a result of the presence of dead pines following the pine beetle outbreak of 2000-2002 and dead deciduous trees resulting from fairly recent forest management practices, a large area along the south side of Firetower Rd. east of the Peabody Check Station, Catoosa Wildlife Management Area, Cumberland Co., TN, has become excellent habitat for Red-headed Woodpeckers, eight of which were noted along a stretch of 5-6 km 12 August 2006 (SJS, LK); this area includes a newly created "oak savannah."

The first Yellow-bellied Sapsucker of the season Regionally was reported from Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN, 24 September 2006 (WAW).

An Olive-sided Flycatcher was observed for the first time on record at Burgess Falls State Natural Area, Putnam Co., TN, 16 September 2006 (DAD *) during the Putnam County FBC; the date of this sighting falls midway between the early arrival and late departure dates Regionally for this species.

An extremely late and well photographed Eastern Wood-Pewee showed up at the Kendall Recreation Area, Russell Co., KY, 12 November 2006 (RMD photo), providing one of very few November records of this flycatcher Regionally and the late fall departure date for the Commonwealth of Kentucky (Palmer-Ball 2003). On 20 October 2006 a darkly featured wood-pewee was photographed in Barren River State Resort Park, Barren Co., KY (DLR photo); the bird vocalized and uttered notes that seemed concordant with those of Western Wood-Pewee, but the identity of this wood-pewee remains uncertain.

Two Yellow-bellied Flycatchers identified by plumage, behavior, and shape at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 8 September 2006 (RMD photo) were the first with details from that county and the first Regionally this fall.

An Empidonax flycatcher that flew in to a taped song of Alder Flycatcher (on the first date seen) and that uttered a distinctive "pip" call (on the second date seen) was found at Clifty Pond, Pulaski Co., KY, 24-25 September 2006 (RMD); it was photographed on the latter date (RMD photo); although identification of fall empids, especially those belonging to the Traillii complex, is difficult, this report of Alder Flycatcher seems about as well documented as such reports are likely to get, short of obtaining a specimen, so it becomes the first apparently valid fall report for the Region.

A family group of four Willow Flycatchers, including at least two fledged but still dependent young, was observed near the end of Brodio Rd., southeastern Fentress Co., TN, 11 August 2006 (SJS), providing the latest fall departure date ever for this flycatcher Regionally, as well as the late departure date this season around the Region.

Two Least Flycatchers, rarely identified during autumn in the Region, were found at Casey Creek, Adair Co., KY, 8 September 2006 (RMD), the first record with details for that county and the first Leasts reported Regionally this fall (though the species breeds sparingly here and there around the Region in at least some years).  A calling empid with short primary extension and a small bill was nicely photographed at Clifty Pond, Pulaski Co., KY, 25 September 2006 (RMD photo) and was identified as an apparent Least Flycatcher also; I am not very familiar with the "wit" call of Least Flycatcher, but I imagine that separating this call from the "wit" call of Willow Flycatcher (and apparently of some western empidonaces) must be a challenge.

The last Eastern Kingbird of the season Regionally was noted on Allen Hollow Rd., Putnam Co., TN, 3 October 2006 (JCF), providing a new late fall departure date for that county and one of few October records around the Region.

Loggerhead Shrikes continue to be reported in just a few counties of the Region in seemingly diminishing numbers each season; see Appendix B (below).

The first Philadelphia Vireo of the season Regionally showed up in some tomato plants near City Lake, Putnam Co., TN, 8 September 2006 (BHS), providing a new early fall arrival date in that county; another seen at the parking lot for the Cathy Crockett Trail, Pulaski Co., KY, 7 October 2006 (RMD) was latest ever in that county and latest reported Regionally this fall.  Several were reported on the various fall counts this season, and it was generally a better fall migration for this vireo than "usual."

Jay through Pipit

Two late Purple Martins were found at Clifty Pond, Pulaski Co., KY, 24 September 2006, the latest report of the season; a single martin found on the White County FBC 23 September 2006 (WAW, MPO, TS) was also noteworthy.

A flock of 130 Tree Swallows, mainly juveniles, was present on Smith Rd., southeastern Monroe Co., KY, 27 August 2006 (WAW, SJS), a sizable flock--with a curious age ratio--for the time of year.

A count of 256 Northern Rough-winged Swallows was made during the Macon County BirdBlitz 30 September 2006 (JDF, MRB, SJS, DAD), a rather large number of late migrants, at least compared to numbers found around the Region at the same time of year in the past; late Regionally was a Rough-wing at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 21 October 2006 (RMD), but latest Regionally was another at Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY, 25 October 2006 (DLR).

Quite late, and latest ever in Pulaski Co., KY, was a Bank Swallow at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, 21 September 2006 (RMD).

A Cliff Swallow at Fishing Creek, Lake Cumberland, Pulaski Co., KY, 21 September 2006 (RMD) was latest ever during fall in that county, as well as latest reported this fall Regionally.

A Barn Swallow in Pulaski Co., KY, 16 October 2006 (RMD) was latest ever during fall there; late Regionally this season was at least one Barn at Cooley's Pond, Wayne Co., KY, 21 October 2006 (RMD), but latest Regionally were two at Barren River Reservoir, Barren Co., KY, 25 October 2006 (DLR).

The first Red-breasted Nuthatch reported around the Region this fall appeared on Hurricane Ridge Rd., DeKalb Co., TN, 29 September 2006 (TLC, VC); by season's end very few reports had been submitted, suggesting a negligible irruption into the Region for the winter.

The first report of Brown Creeper this fall Regionally came from Mt. Zion, Pulaski Co., KY, 6 October 2006 (RMD).

A Bewick's Wren was found along Rt. 56 in southern Jackson Co., TN, 24 September 2006 (DLC, KLM), providing the first record for that county and one of very few recent records of this now nearly extirpated species, which until the late 1970s was a fairly common breeder in the Region.

The Region's latest House Wren this fall was noted at the Wolf Creek Dam, Russell Co., KY, 22 November 2006 (RMD).

Following the discovery of singing Sedge Wrens in the Heritage Marsh, White Co., TN, at the end of the summer 2006 season (see Summer 2006 UCR Bird Report), another singing Sedge Wren was noted in the same county on Black Oak Rd., about 2-3 km from the Heritage Marsh, 21 August 2006 (SJS); a count of five Sedge Wrens was made in the Heritage Marsh, White Co., TN, 21 October 2006 (SJS).
