Steve Stedman's 2020 UCR Blog
Items relating to the natural history of the Upper Cumberland Region are the focus of this quasi-blog. Birds and butterflies are the main focus, but other matters natural occasionally intrude. To report items of interest, send an email to this address: birdbfly7101@gmail.com.
31 December 2020 Since 1987 I have kept annual yard lists at my home in Putnam County, TN; this year's species list ended at 133, quite a reduction from the first and longest list (155) achieved in 1987 but still a pleasure to maintain. |
17 December 2020 A CBC was conducted at Barren River Lake, located in several counties of south-central Kentucky, on this date; 87 species were reported. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was among the more unusual species to be identified. Thanks to Dave Roemer and Brooks and Lyn Atherton for taking part in this event. |
5 November 2020 A flock of 14 Evening Grosbeaks was noted at City Lake today; they were present for just a few minutes and were not noted again; a photo displaying 10 of the grosbeaks may be viewed by clicking on the link in this sentence. Purple Finches and Pine Siskins have been present for over a month in small numbers and remained in that status through the end of the year. On or near this date a late Bay-breasted Warbler was noted in Morgan County by Jeanne Richardson. |
3 October 2020 The Ross's Goose returned to City Lake on this date and was photographed. |
14 September 2020 An adult Ross's Goose appeared on City Lake today; it could fly well and was present on several days later in the month. While birding at Cane Creek park during late February of this year I spoke with a local resident of the area who reported that a Ross's Goose had been present in the park during late summer of 2019; those sightings and the ones at City Lake possibly all applied to the same bird. |
