Lake Cumberland State Resort Park (LCSRP) is one of the key attractions in Russell County.  This park is located east on Jamestown on the shores of the lake from which it derives its name.  To get to this park, take Rt. 61 south from Jamestown about 45 miles and look on the east (left) for the well marked entrance to the park.  The entrance road is about five miles long and passes through hilly woodland for most of its length.  These woods harbor a diverse array of forest birds and are worth working for birds most seasons of the year.  About 0.25 miles after getting on the park entrance road, there is a paved road going right; this road leads down to the shore of the lake where you may scope for waterbirds; the woodlands on either side of the road are worth checking for birds as well as you drive down to the lake.  Return to the main park road and go right.  About two miles further, you will come to a parking lot on the right for the Baugh Branch Nature Trail; this 1.6 mile long trail passes through woodland and ends in an overlook of the lake.  Return to the main park road and continue right.

At the end of the park road, various facilities are available, including a lodge, restaurant, and various recreational developments.  The Lake Bluff Nature Trail circles these facilities and provides a diverse array of habitats to check for birds.

Please send details about any birds you record in these areas—or any public access site in Russell Co.—to me at the e-mail address noted above. sjs.
