Results of Pooled Data Event in Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, and Putnam Counties, Tennessee, and Pulaski County, Kentucky, Using Data Collected According to Great Backyard Bird Count Protocols19 February 2011

A Northern Mockingbird photographed in Crossville, Cumberland County, Tennessee, on the day of the Pooled Data Event; photo Veronica Wright.

The data below for 100 species of birds occurring in the Upper Cumberland Region during late winter 20102011 derive from results of the Pooled Data Event (PDE) as recorded on Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) checklists from six Upper Cumberland Region countiesCumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Jackson, and Putnam counties, Tennessee, as well as Pulaski County, Kentucky.  All pooled data were collected 19 February 2011. Many thanks to all the observers who submitted checklists from these counties on that date; thanks are due also to observers from other UCR counties who submitted checklists for 19 February 2011but not in sufficient quantity, detail, or timeliness to reach the 10 checklists per county minimum necessary for inclusion belowand to all observers who submitted data from still other UCR counties for one or more of the other three days of the GBBC.

To see a map (Figure 1) of the Upper Cumberland Region highlighting counties in which GBBC data from the PDE were collected 19 February 2011, click on this link:

All data provided below derive  from checklists representing a time frame between 15 minutes and 2 hours in duration. In most cases the data came to SJS as a forwarded copy of the checklist results sent to observers (on request) as e-mail generated by the GBBC data-entry program.  Observers listed their names and data collection sites in the "Comments" section of the checklist report.

Remarkable numbers of Sandhill Cranes, nearly 6000 (assuming no overlap in the groups that were counted, probably not a valid assumption), were reported migrating northward during the day of the PDE.  This number is all the more remarkable when one considers that over 20,000 cranes had previously formed a migration staging site in Barren County, Kentucky, prior to the PDE at a site well north of the sites where migrating cranes were counted 19 February 2011.

Note: The weather during the 2011 version of the Pooled Data Event was generally conducive to the collection of bird data (although windy at times) and quite unlike the snowstorm-dominated conditions that characterized the Pooled Data Events for 2006 and 2007 and the cold-dominated conditions of the PDE for 2010.
