Results of Pooled Data Event in Pulaski County, Kentucky, and Cumberland, DeKalb, Jackson, Putnam, and White Counties, Tennessee, Using Data Collected According to Great Backyard Bird Count Protocols14 February 2009

Two of many Pine Siskins found during the most conspicuous Regional irruption event in nearly two decades, these individuals' image was captured in Cumberland County, Tennessee; photo Karla Miller (19 January 2009).

The data below for 93 species of birds occurring in the Upper Cumberland Region during late winter 20082009 derive from results of the Pooled Data Event as recorded on Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) checklists from six Upper Cumberland Region countiesPulaski County, Kentucky, and Cumberland, DeKalb, Jackson, Putnam, and White counties, Tennessee.  All pooled data were collected February 14, 2009. Many thanks to all the observers who submitted checklists from these counties on that date; thanks are due also to observers from other UCR counties who submitted checklists for February 14, 2009, but not in sufficient quantity to reach the 10 checklists per county minimum necessary for inclusion below, and to all observers who submitted data from still other UCR counties for one or more of the other three days of the GBBC.

To see a map (Figure 1) of the Upper Cumberland Region highlighting counties in which GBBC data were collected 14 February 2009, click on this link:

Nearly all data provided below derive  from checklists representing a time frame between 15 minutes and 2 hours in duration. In a few cases checklists representing longer time frames are included or checklists falling within that time frame but including birds seen outside the stated time frame are included, but avoidance of such lists is recommended in the future.  In most cases the data came to SJS as a forwarded copy of the checklist results sent to observers (on request) as e-mail generated by the GBBC data-entry program.  Most observers listed their names and data collection sites in the "Comments" section of the checklist report.

Note: Like the weather during the 2008 version of the Regional Pooled Data Event, weather during 2009 was quite conducive to the collection of bird data and quite unlike the snowstorm-dominated conditions that characterized the Pooled Data Events of 2006 and 2007.
