Results of Bird Counts in Pulaski County, Kentucky, and Cumberland, DeKalb, Putnam, and White Counties, Tennessee, Pooling Data Collected According to Great Backyard Bird Count MethodologyFebruary 16, 2008

An adult White-crowned Sparrow visits a backyard bird feeding station on Student's Home Rd., DeKalb County, Tennessee, just prior to the Great Backyard Bird Count; photo Judy C. Fuson (14 February 2008).

The data below for 105 species of birds occurring in the Upper Cumberland Region during late winter 20072008 derive from results of the Pooled Data Event as recorded on Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) checklists from five Upper Cumberland Region countiesPulaski County, Kentucky, and Cumberland, DeKalb, Putnam, and White counties, Tennessee.  All pooled data were collected February 16, 2008. Many thanks to all the observers who submitted checklists from these counties on that date; thanks are due also to observers from other UCR countiesincluding Warren County, Tennesseewho also submitted checklists for February 16, 2008, but not a sufficient number to reach the 10 checklists per county minimum needed for inclusion below, and to all observers who submitted data from still other UCR counties for one or another of the remaining three days of the GBBC.

To see a map (Figure 1) of the Upper Cumberland Region highlighting counties in which GBBC data were collected 16 February 2008, click on this link:

Nearly all data provided below derive  from checklists representing a time frame between 15 minutes and 2 hours in duration; in a few cases data from checklists representing longer time frames are included, but avoidance of such lists is recommended in the future.  In most cases the data came to SJS as a forwarded copy of the checklist results sent to observers (on request) as e-mail generated by the GBBC data-entry program.  Most observers listed their names and data collection sites in the "Comments" section of the checklist report.

Note: Unlike the weather during the last two GBBC Pooled Data Events (February 2006 and and February 2007), when snowy conditions negatively affected the counting of birds, weather during the 2008 version of the Regional Pooled Data Event was quite conducive to the collection of bird data.
