Putnam County East Butterfly Count, 2002Present

The first annual Fourth of July Butterfly Count in eastern Putnam County was conducted, appropriately enough, 4 July 2002 with two observersStephen J. Stedman (SJS) and Richard W. Simmers, Jr. (RWS)taking part.  These butterfly counts, currently sponsored by the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) and formerly by the Xerces Society, may take place on any day during June and July and are usually conducted on approximately the same date each year to increase comparability of the resulting data.   To allow for counting of more species and individuals than were counted in 2002, the date of this count  was pushed back to late July in 2003 and was conducted during late July or early August (and called Fall Butterfly Counts if conducted in August) through 2013. In 2014 it was pushed back even further to mid-August, where it is expected to remain for the next decade or so, that period usually hosting the largest number of butterfly species during each butterfly "season" (i.e., each year).

The count in eastern Putnam County is centered at the intersection of Pen Hook [aka Pin Hook] Rd. and Rt. 70N about 4 km [2.5 mi] west of Monterey.  Most of the area within the 15-mile-diameter (177 square mile) count circle is forested.  Much of it includes the escarpment between the Highland Rim and the Cumberland Plateau or the plateau itself.

About 64 species of butterfliestwo-thirds of the species known to have occurred in the countywere registered during one or more of the Putnam County East butterfly counts conducted during its first decade of operation (Table 2), providing information about the relative abundance of these species during mid-summer and often revealing rather marked, but expected, changes in their population numbers from year to year. During this decade the coverage of the count circle included only areas within Putnam County and excluded coverage of locations within three adjacent counties (Cumberland, Overton, and White counties). Species added to the total species during the second decade of this count's operation, when coverage expanded to take in the Overton County part of the circle, include Long-tailed Skipper (2012), Delaware Skipper (2014), Northern Broken-Dash (2013), Ocola Skipper, (2014), Juniper Hairstreak (2016), Creole Pearly-eye (2016), and Southern Pearly-eye (2016) (Table 1). No species new to the count were observed during 2015, but the species total (52) was the highest ever achieved on a butterfly count in Putnam County; thanks to Doug Bruce, Mindy Fawver, Ed LeGrand, Janie Finch, and Sue Pirolo for helping to achieve this fine total and especially for taking photographs of all but four species observed during that year's count. The count conducted during 2016 achieved an even greater species total (58), substantiating the belief that mid-August is the period of greatest butterfly diversity in this part of Tennessee, and once again photographs of all but four species were obtained during the count.

In 2014 the Putnam County East butterfly count included in its coverage for the first time the Long Hollow Farm, located in the southern part of the count circle and owned by Larry and Barb Little. Besides making their farm available for surveying, the Littles also provided a compilation dinner to the participants who took part in the Putnam County butterfly count that year. Many thanks are extended to the Littles for their generosity. In considerable measure due to the Littles' "sponsorship" of the count, the species total (46) for the 2014 count was the highest achieved up to that year. The continuing support of this butterfly count by the Littles in 2016 contributed to the highest species total yet achieved on this count.
